The ozone layer, a fragile shield of gas, protects the Earth from the harmful portion of the rays of the sun, thus helping preserve life on the planet.
September 16, 2018 was World Ozone Day. This day was about creating awareness for the ozone layer and The Montreal Protocol. The Montreal Protocol is widely lauded as a huge environmental success. Whilst the damage we have done to the ozone layer has not yet been undone, thanks to this agreement and the collaborative effort of nations around the world, there is scientific evidence that the ozone layer is healing itself and is expected to recover by the middle of this century. The Montreal Protocol has also considerably reduced climate warming.
The theme of this year was a motivational rallying call urging all of us to carry on with the work of protecting the ozone layer and the climate under the Montreal Protocol. The theme has two main messages – our work of protecting the ozone layer also protects climate and that the Montreal Protocol is a “cool” treaty, as exemplified by its success.
